David Copperfield
8-11 May, 2014

Escapade'sventure in 2014 was a 13-actor adaptation of David Copperfield, Charles Dickens' most biographical novel. Full of typical eccentric, Dickensian characters it tells the story of the young David and his travels through life, the cruelty that he is exposed to and the love and loss that he experiences on his journey into manhood.

The 13 actors take on Dickens most memorable character's each transforming themselves at once from the debt ridden Micawber, to the wicked, untrustworthy Murdstone or the slimy Uriah Heep.

Escapade’s resident production team were on board: designed by award winning Adrian.P.Smith, with a haunting, original soundtrack composed and produced by Julian Jahanpour, Nigel Haywood and Joe Lewis with lighting design, by Tony Murchland. Julie Nash was assistant director, costumes and props by Juliana Georgiou-Lormand and directed, with her characteristic look at the pitiful condition of humankind, by Sue Flack, this proved to be Escapade's most full-bodied production yet.

Review in AT STAGE DOOR
"David Copperfield is about beginnings and learning, both emotionally and morally, and in this stunning production, an array of 13 characters, in the Nau Ivanow a great feat in itself, accompanies David on his journey through life. Young David (a delightful debut from Miquel Pàmies Flack) is on stage while his older self (Rob Bertels-impressive narrator) guides us through the text.  As in all great texts there are goodies- Agnes Wickfield, Pegotty and Mr Pegotty all artfully played by Rebecca Milner, Julie Nash and Reg Wilson and baddies: Uriah Heep (Nick Devlin), James Steerforth (Daniel Ewing), Murdstone and Creakle (Richard Felix) likewise beautifully characterised. And it is through these people that David will learn his lesson in life with the help of his Aunt Betsey (a special mention here for Sue Flack's performance-a delicacy.) Another special mention goes to the way the actors skilfully transform the set, beautifully designed by Adrian.P.Smith, on a very small stage, with ease and efficiency. How four wooden boxes can be turned from a table into a prison or even a carriage, with a dramatic lighting design from Tony Murchland, is of great merit. The actors are superb, especially the more senior members of the company, who show knowhow and a certain "savoire faire" that is enviable."
