The Government Inspector
Escapade's version of The Government Inspector was performed in Barcelona in 2001. It was rated as the most popular show of the month on the Barcelona fringe.
The production was a huge risk taker given that the director opted for casting actors from the circus and street theatre world and former members of Els Comediants, so as to optimise the physical and visual aspects of the show giving it a very commedia del arte feel. The 12-man show was a great success and labelled by one critic as "the best show you can see in town".
The story tells of the inhabitants of a small Russian provincial town and how they react to the arrival of a supposed Government Inspector. With bribery, corruption and hypocracy, they manage to marry off their daughter, lose all their savings and dirty their names and all to an imposter. The result is a marvellous satire about a corrupt society and its grotesque occupants. None of the characters are without flaw and can be found on our streets or in our town halls today. A tale always modern and telling of our times.
